Djerba is the largest of Tunisia's 60 islands. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea. It is possible to get to the island by ferry or along the embankment. There is also an international airport on the island. The official language is Arabic, but Berber is still spoken in some areas.
The island is very sunny (up to 320 days a year)2, which makes it a popular tourist destination. Summers here are very warm with an average temperature of 28°C and they have a long reverberation until October. The ideal months for a vacation are May to October. There are more than a million date palms throughout the island, which describes the local climate. Olives are mainly grown here.
The most famous destination is located mainly on the eastern and northeastern coast near the village of Midoun. There are beautiful sandy beaches, diverse coastlines, air filled with the scent of jasmine, which has become the national flower, and historical monuments. Tourists are also attracted here by the city of Ajim, in which the exteriors of Mos Eisley from the first Star Wars were placed in 1977. Furthermore, the so-called Explore Djerba park, which is divided into three parts - a museum, a park of historical crafts and a research station for observing Nile crocodiles.
In the capital Houmt Souk, translated as "market place" or "market district", located in the middle of the island, there is an international airport. You will find many mosques here - the most famous are Jemaâ El Ghorba, Jemaâ Ettrouk (also called the Turkish Mosque) and Sidi Brahim El Jemni built in 1674. Every morning there is a big spectacle - a fish auction - at the main market Marché central. You can also test your business talent in the city by haggling over the prices of goods. The 15th-century defensive fortress Borj el-Kebir, which is built on ancient Romanesque foundations, is located near the wharf.
The La Ghriba synagogue, also called La Merveilleuse (or The Beautiful), in the village of Er Riad is definitely worth a visit. The synagogue houses some of the oldest scrolls of the Jewish Torah written on gazelle skin.
The highest peak with a height of 54 m above sea level is Dharet Adloun. At the top is the Guellala museum with a unique exhibition and a stylish lookout cafe.
To this day, drinking water is brought to the island through a pipeline from the mainland. Although water springs up in some places, it is slightly iron and sulphurous springs that are used by some hotels for therapeutic purposes.
