Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic. It is a statutory, regional and university town in the northeast of the Czech Republic in the Moravian-Silesian Region. It is interesting that only about a third of Ostrava lies in Moravia, while the majority in Silesia. The city is located at the confluence of the rivers Odra, Opava, Ostravice and Lučina.
For the development of Ostrava, the breakthrough was the discovery of coal in the second half of the 18th century, which was later followed by the development of ironworks. Today, Ostrava has long since lost the face of a typically industrial city, coal mining finally ended in 1994 and mining museums were established on the site of the original mines. The city's industrial heritage is an exceptional architectural gem.
You can be attracted to the metropolis of northern Moravia for a number of reasons: unique industrial monuments, interesting architecture, a rich selection of leisure activities and finally a convenient location near the Polish and Slovak borders. The offer of accommodation and catering facilities will satisfy the needs of even the most demanding visitor to Ostrava.
An unmissable landmark of Ostrava is the Lower Vítkovice area, a technically and technologically perfect area of industrial buildings from the first half of the 19th century. The complex consists of the Hlubina mine, blast furnaces and the coke plant of the Vítkovice Ironworks. And it's not just a place reserved only for lovers of technical monuments! For example, after the revitalization, the former gas tank has become a multifunctional cultural center Gong, where educational and social events, congresses or exhibitions take place.
The oldest preserved monument of Ostrava is the Silesian-Ostrava Castle, which was founded by the Piasts as a border fortress. Over the centuries, the castle "fell" by 16 m lower due to the mining of coal seams, however, today it is presented to you restored in its original beauty and is the only preserved of the three local castles. There is a museum of witches and an exhibition of the law of suffering, a lookout tower and a castle gallery.
Families with children will certainly enjoy the Ostrava Zoo, a large area in a forest park in the Stromovka district. The Botanical Park in the Ostrava Zoo offers three 6 km long botanical trails and other unique exhibits.
In Ostrava, there are several hiking trails that offer tourists and locals of all ages to combine natural movement with exploring the natural, architectural and other tourist attractions of the city.
