The history of the island of Rhodes dates back to ancient times. It was inhabited already in prehistoric times, and later played an important role in ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. The island was an important maritime center and was famous for its colossal statue of Helios, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.


Today, Rhodes is known for its picturesque villages, historical monuments and amazing beaches. The capital of the island is the city of Rhodes, which boasts an incredible historic center, a fortified castle and a breathtaking atmosphere. The medieval city of Rhodes is even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a fascinating place to learn about history.
