The town of Vrchlabí, which is called the gateway to the Giant Mountains, is a picturesque mountain town in the valley of the upper Elbe. Due to its location, Vrchlabí is the natural center of the central part of the Giant Mountains and thanks to many local monuments, Vrchlabí is a year-round sought-after tourist, longing for a relaxing and active holiday. Near the town you will find several ski ski resorts, such as Herlíkovice and the ski resort Vrchlabí Kněžický vrch - Kebrlák with two cable cars and three lifts and groomed downhill and cross-country trails.
The dominant feature of the town was a beautiful Renaissance chateau. The construction of the chateau began in 1546 by Kryštof Gendorf of Gendorf. The castle was one of the first buildings of its kind in Bohemia. Today it is the seat of the town hall. However, you can visit an extensive natural landscape park, which is led by an educational trail.
Other important monuments of Vrchlabí are the church of St. Augustine, the adjacent monastery or the neo-Gothic church of St. Lawrence. The main building of the Krkonoše Museum of the KRNAP Administration is located in the former monastery. And its main attraction is the exhibition Stone and Life. Other sights include a set of four gabled houses, which is one of the oldest folk buildings in the Giant Mountains and is a rare remnant of the original urban development.
Every year, traditional events such as the Vrchlabí Music Summer, the Krkonoše Beer Festival, the Craft Days, the Tourist March or the Krakonoš Hundred are held in Vrchlabí. From the vicinity of Vrchlabí, we recommend climbing the magnificent views of the Žalý lookout tower.
