The monasteries of Meteora are one of the most breathtaking and famous pilgrimage sites in Greece. They are located on rocky peaks in the region of Thessaly, near the city of Kalabaka. The name "Meteora" in Greek means "hanging in the air" or "above the sky", which very faithfully describes the location of these monasteries.
This unique monastic complex was founded in the 14th century and reached its peak in the 16th century. Monasteries were built on top of high rock formations created by erosion and volcanic activity. Around 24 monasteries were originally built, but today six remain active and open to the public.
